What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which typically emerges before the age of 12 years, with an estimated prevalence of between 2% and 6% of the adult population. The symptoms include difficulties with attention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity which interfere with a person's activities and participation in life.

Why do an ADHD Assessment?

Exploring an ADHD assessment in adulthood may provide clarity on lifelong challenges, improving self-understanding and self-esteem. A diagnosis opens the door to effective treatments, tools, and strategies that enhance focus, productivity, and emotional well-being. It can also lead to better relationships, work performance, and overall quality of life by reducing frustration and offering practical support for daily struggles.

Adult ADHD Assessment at Drummoyne Psychology

A thorough assessment by an appropriate clinician is required for an accurate diagnosis of ADHD. This will inform the best possible care and intervention needed.

The Assessment Process

Our adult ADHD assessment involve three scheduled appointments (ideally in person). These appointments are approximately 50 minutes in length.

  • Appointment One and Two: You will discuss many aspects of your emotional, physical and mental wellbeing and participate in clinical interviews. This is to establish whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD is met and identify whether other conditions are likely to be present.

  • Appointment Three: You will be provided with the outcomes of the assessment, feedback and options for support and intervention. You will be provided with a letter stating the outcome of assessment.

Other Essential Parts of the Assessment:

  • You will complete a standardised questionnaire between sessions.

  • You will complete an online psychometric assessment between sessions.

  • You will need to identify at least two people who know you well. This includes someone who knew you as a child (e.g., parent) and someone who knows you well in your current life (e.g., partner or close friend).

  • These people will be asked to complete a standardised questionnaire or answer specific questions about you.

  • The psychologist will need to review any previous school reports, employment evaluations, cognitive tests, speech/learning assessments (please bring with you to your first appointment)
